Early Orthodontic Treatment
When is the best time to begin Orthodontics?
Enhancing a smile can take place at any age; however there is an optimal time to begin treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial Orthodontic evaluations should occur at the first sign of Orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. Dr. McClurg’s Smile Center encourages patients to get a jump start and be prepared for potential Orthodontic treatment.
What are the benefits of early Orthodontic evaluation?
Dr. McClurg’s Smile Center feels that having an early evaluation will create the chance to prevent any orthodontic problems and a better opportunity for more successful treatment. Early Orthodontic treatment will prevent any serious problems, and if early treatment is not necessary then Dr. McClurg’s Smile Center will monitor growth to see when treatment is needed.
Why is age 7 considered the optimal time for screening?
At the age of 7, the first molars are erupting and establishing the back bite. At that point the Dr. McClurg’s Smile Center can evaluate the tooth relationships. Possible problems can be overbite, open bite, crowding, or gummy smiles. An early evaluation can increase the chances for your maximum potential.
What are the advantages of interceptive treatment?
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry though influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
Are you a candidate for Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is not just for improving the look of your smile; it also improves bite (malocclusions) problems as well. Malocclusions occur from a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Bad malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth or feel about your own smile.
Why should malocclusions be treated?
Misaligned teeth are harder to properly brush and floss, which can contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Teeth that are protruding are more at risk to accidental chipping. Bite problems can result in tongue thrusting habits, speech impediments, and unfavorable growth. Dr. McClurg’s Smile will not only give you an incredible smile, we will provide you with a healthier and happier you.
